OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS AND CURATORS | FALL OF 2022
DUPLEX | Artists in Residence is an artist-run space, housing several studios, a residency program and a gallery, located in the center of Lisbon, in Graça neighborhood.
Seeking to stimulate creative processes, experimentation and plastic production as well as the discourse that these dynamics originate, Duplex presents itself as a privileged territory for the coexistence of different artists, different ways of creating and different ways of thinking about the work of art and its context.
Valuing advances and setbacks, valuing error, failure, and disruption as participants in contemporary praxis, the entire structure and functioning of the Duplex seeks, in addition to celebrating the final results, to bring the public closer to the conceptual and procedural richness of artistic creation.
For resident artists and curators, Duplex residency program allows a quick insertion in the artistic community of Lisbon, offering the possibility, time and space to develop and show their work. With conversations, visits, discussions and monitoring of projects developed in residence, Duplex seeks to adapt to the interests and needs of each group of residents, working through open calls, but also accepting self-proposals. The residencies for curators are usually coordinated with the artistic residencies.

Lisbon city center - between Bairro da Graça and Penha de França.
Transports and local shops at our door step. Several galleries and cultural spaces near by.
Dates:
> Open Call: until JUNE 17TH | LATE APPLICATIONS ARE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY
> Confirmation: July 1 st
> Residency Periods: from September to December 2022
The resident must select the complete months (4 weeks) in which he/she wishes to attend the residency, considering the following periods:
> SEPTEMBER: September 05th to 30th
> OCTOBER: October 03rd to 28th
> NOVEMBER: November 07th to December 02nd
The residents wishing to extend the program from November to December (half a month) can do so fo 50% of the cost
> DECEMBER: December 05th to 16th (2 weeks - only for November residents)
For the resident curator the minimum period of residency will be 3 months: September to November.
* For residents who attend the program for several months, attendance will be uninterrupted.
** We strongly advise you to stay for at least 2 months.
*** For resident artists, open days will only be held in October and November
**** For resident curators, the exhibition will be from November 18th to December 2nd
What's included (ARTISTS):
- Individual work studio (3 walls) - available from 7 am to 10 pm
- Program: presentation of portfolios, conversations, guest visits, and organized visits to artist studios and other cultural spaces
- Project support
- Curatorial support
- Productive and dynamic environment - in addition to resident artists, Duplex permanently houses the studios of 13 artists
- Access to common areas of the Duplex (kitchenette, terrace, wc's)
- Access to basic equipment and tools
- Open day (every two months)
What's included (CURATORS):
- PROJECT ROOM for small projects throughout the residency - available from 7 am to 10 pm
- Program: presentation of portfolios, conversations, guest visits, and organized visits to workshops or other cultural spaces
- Project support
- Productive and dynamic environment - in addition to resident artists, Duplex permanently houses ateliers of 13 artists
- Access to common areas of the Duplex (kitchenette, terrace, wc's)
- Access to basic equipment and tools
- Opportunity to develop a public program during the residency
- Basic support in the production and installation of the exhibition
- A two-week exhibition at the Duplex (April/July)
- Printed communication materials related to the exhibition
What is expected of the ARTIST:
- Development of the proposed project
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in contact with other artists
- Presence and involvement in ongoing activities in the context of the residency program
- Responsible use of space and its equipment
What is expected from the CURATOR:
- Organization and production of a collective exhibition (the exhibition must have at least 2 artists, and the majority must reside in Portuguese territory)
- Involvement in all Duplex activities
- To get to know and be interested in the production of artists who work at Duplex and artists in residence
- To be a responsible and involved member in the Duplex's daily life
* In addition, all artists and curators are encouraged to propose activities that can involve the Duplex internal and external community.

Accommodation:
DUPLEX does not provide accommodation. However, we will be happy to help you find one.
Cost:
500 € per month
+ 100 € per month - Duo Fee (fee for Duos of artists or curators with a history of working in partnership)
+ 50 € per person - Maintenance fee (paid only once at the beginning of the residence)
Payments:
> 1º MONTH: 500€ (600€ duo) - within 2weeks after selection; this value will not be refunded in case of cancelation by the artist/curator
> 2º MONTH: 500€ (600€ duo) - until the end of the 3rd month
> 3º MONTH: 500€ (600€ duo) - until the end of the 2nd month
> 4º MONTH: 500€ (600€ duo) - until the end of the 3rd month
> MAINT. FEE.: 50€ (100€ duo) - First day of residency
Financing:
We are happy to assist future residents in any search or application for grants or any other type of financing.
We ask any candidate to carefully consider whether they are able to proceed with the application, considering that the first payment (which guarantees the reservation of a place in the program) will have to take place 15 days after their selection.
